INWsn's Must-See Matches of the Week

Here are Inland Northwest Soccer News' picks for the best games to head out to see this week in the greater-Spokane area.

Friday: Tough choice here... The Gonzaga men have a doubleheader in which they and Oregon State (featuring Post Fall's Timmy Mueller) face a pair of teams outside the region. Also, Southridge of the MCC comes north to face Lewis & Clark at Hart Field on the South Hill. It's the opening day of the HS soccer season. Southridge, a 3A school, claimed the MCC title a year ago with a 12-2 record while LC was 5-4. INWsn's choice, though, is USA v Costa Rica World Cup Qualifier. The match, taking place at Red Bull Arena in NJ, is on ESPN, Univision and Univision Deportes Network with coverage beginning at 3:30 ET. Kickoff is set for 3:50 ET. The US won their recent Gold Cup semifinal meeting against Costa Rica 2-0.

Saturday: North Idaho College plays Everett in a doubleheader with the ladies at noon and the men following at approximately 2:15.

Sunday: Gonzaga Tripleheader. The action begins with Oregon State facing UC Riverside at 11:00 am followed by the Gonzaga ladies hosting Hawaii at 1:30. The Bulldog men cap the day against American at 4:00.

Monday - Lewiston @ Shadle Park: One of the 5A Inland Empire League sides from across the border comes to town to face the Highlanders. The match is at Merkel at 4:00.

Tuesday: The Northeast A League begins league play with Medical Lake @ Freeman and Lakeside @ Riverside, but the Match of the Day is easily USA at Honduras World Cup Qualifier. The match is on beIN Sports and Universo with coverage beginning at 2:30. The USMNT clobbered Honduras 6-0 in their previous qualification meeting in March.

Must-See Matches Elsewhere in the INW region...

Friday - #14 Nebraska @ Washington State: The Cougs look for a big win against a ranked opponent early in the season in a doubleheader. The match begins at 7:30 following the opener of the Cougar Classic between Georgia Southern and Montana at 5:00. The Cougs and Griz switch opponents Sunday.
Saturday - Central Valley @ Wenatchee: It's a showdown of the second-place teams from a year ago in the GSL and Big Nine at the Apple Bowl at 3:00.
Saturday - West Valley (Yakima) @ Hanford: WV won the Big Nine a year ago and Hanford was tied for first (second on tiebreakers) in the MCC.
Monday - Seattle University @ Idaho: The Vandals host the reigning four-time WAC-champion Redhawks program, picked to finish first again, at 2:00 at the Kibbie Dome.
Monday - Carroll College Women @ Northwest Nazarene: The NAIA Saints head south to Nampa to face the Crusaders at 4:00.
Tuesday - Chiawana @ Southridge: It is the marquee match of the Opening Day of league play in the Mid-Columbia Conference. Chiawana (4A) was third a year ago and Southridge (3A) won the regular season title. The two played in the opener last year as well with Southridge prevailing in overtime, 2-1. The Suns also won the second encounter in a stunning 7-0 result.

*Matches highlighted here do not necessarily indicate games INWsn will be covering in person.

Brian Ching eligible for National Soccer Hall of Fame

The National Soccer Hall of Fame announced Wednesday the official voting ballot for the 2017 induction class. Among the players added to the list for their first year of eligibility is Spokane legend Brian Ching, who was a standout player for Gonzaga University and the Spokane Shadow.

While playing for the Shadow in the Premier Development League, The Hawaiian was among the league's leading goal scorers and was named the PDL Rookie of the Year in 1998. The following season he suffered a terrible facial fracture in an early-season friendly and was sidelined for the rest of the season, missing the team's PDL championship game appearance.

HS Update - 5.03.17: Playoffs, Playoffs, Playoffs

The postseason kicked off Monday around eastern Washington with a few opening round games for the Greater Spokane League and Mid-Columbia Conference with the first round of the 1A district tournament for the Northeast A League following on Tuesday. Wednesday evening is a big night as everyone else in the GSL and MCC get into the mix.

On Monday, the two leagues kicked things off with individual 4A play-in games between their four and five seeds while on the 3A side the bottom seeds from each league squared off against one another.

The 4A meetings were both tight contests. For the second time in a week, the Gonzaga Prep Bullpups were unable to find the back of the net against University, falling 1-0 on a second half tally by Adam Drassen. It was Hunter Atwood's fourth shutout in official play this season for the Titans, who will visit Pasco. Details from Tri-Cities are largely unavailable, but according to a Richland Twitter post, a rebound of a penalty kick late in the match was the deciding moment in a 1-0 victory at Chiawana, which had won four of its last five, to put the Bombers through to a match-up with Central Valley.

It was a one-sided affair, though, down in Tri-Cities as Southridge dominated Shadle Park for a 5-0 win. Azuka Osokogu opened the scoring five minutes in and the Suns took control by the 21st with goals from Jorge Mendez and Emilio Sanchez to make it three. In the second half Mendez added two more back-to-back in the 66th and 70th minutes to complete a hat-trick on the night. Cole Varker registered the shutout as Southridge cruised to a second round match in Spokane against Rogers, which finished second among the 3A GSL schools thanks to a shootout win over Mt Spokane in the final week of the season.

The NEA contests Tuesday were both thrillers.

After a scoreless first half, top seed Colville looked to be in control of things early after the intermission with a pair of goals from Alberto Cisneros in the 45th and 51st, but the second half proved to be a doozy. Nicholas Rosenbeck answered with a goal in the 59th to quickly cut into the deficit and then tied it up in the 67th. Just three minutes later, though, Chase Kanamu put Colville back in front with what held as the winner.

In Newport, the Grizzlies were able to come out on top in a back-and-forth affair with Lakeside. Kai Thomas scored the opener in the 14th, but things were leveled four minutes before the break by Lucas Ousley. Martin Roca put Newport back in front in the 53rd, but Jeffrey Friedman fired back three minutes later to even it up for the Eagles and ultimately send the match to overtime. Johnny Quandt delivered the golden goal five minutes into extra session to give Newport the win.

On Thursday, Colville will host Newport at Spokane Falls CC for the NEA District title and the Great Northern League will open its district tournament with Cheney hosting Clarkston and Pullman playing West Valley. As the GNL regular season champion, East Valley has a bye.

HS Daily - 4.21.17: First-place showdowns highlight huge week in GSL

As the playoffs near, this week is proving to be a huge week for Greater Spokane League sides. Teams at the top of the table - as well as 3A contenders - squared off Monday and Wednesday in races to finish as the top team in their respective classifications.

Want to support INWsn or get free pics?  Click HERE to become a Patron!
The full-length drama started Monday with three undefeated teams. Ferris was 5-0-0 with Central Valley at 4-0-0 and Lewis & Clark at 4-0-0.

Squaring off at Joe Albi Stadium in a make-up of a postponed contest, the Bears and Tigers took to the pitch looking to pull even with Ferris in the win column. The two sides were deadlocked through the first 40 minutes, but Jake Levine broke through in the 50th to give Central Valley the lead. Bailey Rosenau, however, answered in the 65th for Lewis & Clark, ultimately sending the match to overtime and penalty kicks and neither side was able to find the back of the net again. In the shootout, a shot sent high and a save from Andrew Bertone gave the Bears the advantage, allowing Devin Hauenstein to close it out 4-2 in the fourth round for the victory.

That result set up a head-to-head showdown of unbeatens on Wednesday at Ferris. It proved to be another thriller that went to the final moments of overtime before Levine provided a last-second game-winner. Levine started things off well for the Bears when he finished a ball from Hauenstein in the sixth minute, but they went nearly another 50 minutes before Hauenstein added a second via RJ Stretch.

Ferris, though, fought back. Brett Freschler cut into the deficit courtesy of Evan Giem in the 74th. It looked like that may be all, but freshman Caden Martin stunned the Bears in the final moments of regulation with a header off a long Braden Brock throw-in.

The golden goal from Levine, however, gave the Bears the win.

Meanwhile, Lewis & Clark avoided being set further back, snaring a victory via a shootout against Gonzaga Prep. Daniel Dougherty gave the Bullpups the initial lead just five minutes before intermission, but Bailey Rosenau tallied on a rebound in the 61st minute to even things up for the second time in three days. The two sides were deadlocked the rest of the way, necessitating a tiebreaker. Even the shootout went long as a save from LC's Nick Davis gave the Tigers the victory in the seventh round.

The results put Central Valley alone atop the table with just a few games remaining in the regular season - all against 3A opposition. Barring a major slip-up by the Bears, LC and Ferris will be in a race for second that will likely come down to their season finale against one another.

Remaining Games in GSL Title Race
CV (6-0-0): Fri v Rogers, Wed v Shadle, Fri v NC
FER (5-1-0): Fri @ Mt Spokane, Wed v Mead, Fri @ LC
LC (5-1-0): Fri @ Shadle, Wed @ NC, Fri v Ferris

Also among Wednesdays contests was a huge match contest between two of the 3A contenders as North Central played host to Mt Spokane at Joe Albi. Going into the day, all four sides were even on the day, but Rogers and Shadle were squaring off against 4A opposition.

It was a back-and-forth contest, but it was NC getting on the board first with 10 minutes left in the opening half. Jake Healy dove low to nod in a ball from Aidan Chaparro. Brad Campbell evened things up for the Wildcats in the 57th minute off a ball from Cody McDonald. In the 69th, though, a foul in the box allowed Chaparro to convert from the spot to grab the win and the lead among the 3A schools for North Central.

In those other two tilts, Rogers fell 3-0 to University in the first contest of the Albi doubleheader - Adam Drassen scored two and Fraser Robertson the third in a three-goal second half - and Shadle Park took Mead the distance before dropping the decision in a shootout.

In a five-goal first half, Mead grabbed a two-goal lead on back-to-back goals from Conner Cary in the seventh and 11th minutes. Shadle, though, brought it back to level terms with Devin McGowan scoring in the 15th and Dylan Tutt tallying in the 35th. The Highlanders, surprisingly, would even grabbed the lead with a minute left before intermission. Cole Johnson would score in the 55th minute for the Panthers and the two went scoreless the rest of the way with Mead prevailing in the shootout when Shadle missed its final two attempts.

North Central holds the 3A lead by a game, but Mt Spokane and Rogers, who picked up the win against NC, face one another among the remaining contests. An upset win by either in their other matches or one from Shadle could make things interesting.

Remaining Games in 3A GSL Race
North Central (2-4-0): Fri @ GP, Wed v LC, Fri @ CV
Shadle Park (1-5-0): Fri v LC, Wed @ CV, Fri @ U-Hi
Mt Spokane (1-5-0): Fri v Ferris, Wed @ Rogers, Fri @ Mead
Rogers (1-5-0): Fri @ CV, Wed v Mt Spokane, Fri v G-Prep

HS Daily - 3.31.17: Colville lone NEA unbeaten after Lakeside loss

Thursday's light slate of action was eventful in the Northeast A League with Lakeside suffering their first loss of the season at the hands of Medical Lake while Alberto Cisneros added yet another three goals to his tally.

Nicholas Rosenbeck tallied twice for Medical Lake in the win. The hosts were up two late in the first half before Lucas Ousley made it a one-goal affair just before intermission. Rosenbeck's second with five minutes remaining in the contest, however, locked up the result.

Colville, meanwhile, drubbed visiting Deer Park. Cisneros scored in the opening minute with Barrera answering for the Stags in the fifth, but Cisneros tallied again in the 12th and the rout was on as the hosts tallied two more before the break.

In the Great Northern League Clarkston edged West Valley on the road for a 1-0 victory with a goal from Nehemiya Feleke in the 50th minute.

In the other contest Pullman defeated Cheney 2-1, but no details are available at this time.

HS Daily - 3.30.17: Eastmont ends Wenatchee win streak

It was a night of thrillers in the Columbia Basin Big Nine on Tuesday as all three games finished 3-2. Drama continued to unfold Tuesday in the parity-filled MCC and GSL action Wednesday played out much as expected.

In a showdown of unbeatens Tuesday evening, Eastmont came out on top in a dramatic affair at Wenatchee that ended a 12-game league and postseason win streak for the reigning state champion Panthers in the Columbia Basin Big Nine. Wenatchee took the lead twice in the contest but Eastmont equalized in each half. Omar Mendoza struck for the game-winner with just two minutes remaining to give the visiting Wildcats the victory over their city rival.

Davis saw a two goal lead at Moses Lake vanish in the second half at Moses Lake, which pulled even with four minutes remaining. Alexis Arellano, however, tallied three minutes later to give the Pirates the win. In the other CBBN contest, Eisenhower rallied in the second half to claim the lead in the 56th only to see Sunnyside answer in the 58th and nab the win in the 67th.

Unbeaten a year ago, Walla Walla continues to provide surprises this season in the Mid-Columbia Conference. On Tuesday they handed league-leading Pasco a 2-0 loss for its third win of the season. Hanford won 3-1 at Chiawana and Kennewick posted a 4-1 win over Kamiakin for its third victory, putting five teams even at three wins in the top half of the table. Richland earned a victory against Southridge via shootout after a 1-1 draw.

In the Great Northern League East Valley won a top of table clash with fellow unbeaten Cheney to grab control of the league. Devonte Gorman kept his scoring streak in league play going with the opening tally in the 2-0 win while Kohl Tomcho pushed his shutout streak to three consecutive games. In the other GNL contest, Pullman downed Clarkston 2-1.

Alberto Cisneros also kept his scoring streak running Tuesday with four goals in a 5-2 rout at Medical Lake for Colville. He had two in the opening four minutes. Riverside took care Deer Park with Jeff Thompson scoring three in a 4-1 win and Lucas Ousley scored both in the second half for Lakeside in a 2-1 comeback win against Newport.

The next day in the Greater Spokane League, two contests stood out for how things played out. Rogers snatched a shootout victory against North Central after a 1-1 draw, but the most dramatic match of the day was at Ferris. The Saxons found themselves down two in the 52nd minute and looked headed toward a loss against University before freshman Caden Martin went crazy in the final eight minutes. He set up Alessandro Contos in the 82nd to get things started and then scored himself in the 78th and 80th minutes to snatch the victory in the final minutes to remain 3-0.

Central Valley and Lewis & Clark posted four goals each in comfortable wins against fellow 4A opponents. The Bears were up two at the break at Gonzaga Prep and added a third two minutes into the second half. They made it four in the 56th before the Bullpups answered with a goal in the 59th and a second at the death. The Tigers were locked in a hard-fought match at Albi with Mead, leading 1-0 at the break before two early second half goals put the match out of reach. Colby Aitchison added onto his first half free kick tally with a goal in the 50th and Brennan Murphy scored the first of two in the 54th as his scoring tally hit eight goals in three games. Mead answered, but the goal merely spoiled the shutout in a 4-1 result.

Rounding out the day's action was a 1-0 decision that fell in Mt Spokane's favor against Shadle Park.

In other CBBN results Eastmont edged Davis 1-0 and Sunnyside cruised to a 3-0 home win against West Valley with two goals from Gonzalo Frausto.

In the Greater Spokane League, it was a day of one-sided affairs as most of the contests were 4A versus 3A. In the lone all-4A match-up, Central Valley rolled to a big win against visiting Mead with Connor Wold adding on to Devin Hauenstein's opener with a hat-trick by the 57th minute with Mead's lone tally coming late in the game to spoil the shutout.

In the other contests, Max Thompson scored both for Ferris in the first half for a 2-0 win at Shadle, Gonzaga Prep drubbed host Mt Spokane 6-0 with a pair of goals each from Luke Denke and Luke Allen. Brennan Murphy tallied his second hat-trick of the season to guide Lewis & Clark to a 3-1 win at Rogers and Adam Drassen scored twice for University in a 3-0 win against North Central.

HS Daily - 3.24.17: Talent gaps painfully clear in GNL, NEA

On the third gameday for the Great Northern League and the second for the Northeast A League, it became rather obvious who the contenders were going to be for the season as the closest game of five was a 3-1 victory by Cheney over West Valley.

In the GNL, Cheney is 3-0 and East Valley is 2-0. Defending champion Pullman is a surprising 0-2 (idle Thursday), but will most likely rebound as its two games came against the previously mentioned unbeatens. In the NEA, it was another day of blowouts as Lakeside, Medical Lake and Colville outscored the opposition 20-1.

Cheney held the lead in its road contest on a sixth minute Kelby Holland strike, but Noah Prophet pushed the match out of reach early in the second half on goals in the 48th and 51st. Dalton Mauzay's shutout attempt was spoiled in the 72nd by Chase Howat.

Devonte Gorman torched Clarkston with two goals and an assist in the 3-0 East Valley win. He scored in the eighth and set up Zach Bowsky two minutes later. He collected the brace in the 46th and Kohl Tomcho held on for the shutout.

Alberto Cisneros tallied two goals and two assists while Eduardo Zarate struck for the other two goals in a 4-0 Colville win against Newport. Nicholas Rosenbeck led Medical Lake's rout of Deer Park, notching five goals and an assist in the 7-0 win. Also scoring five was Lucas Ousley as Lakeside drubbed Riverside 9-1.

HS Daily - 3.23.17: North Central rallies to top Shadle

Opening day in the Greater Spokane League was filled with a slate of one-sided contests for the most part with the exceptions being a 1-0 decision for Ferris on a penalty against Gonzaga Prep and a rally from North Central to grab a 2-1 victory against rival Shadle Park at Joe Albi Stadium.

In a back-and-forth affair, the Highlanders looked like they were going to get the better of their foes in the early going and took the lead when Devin McGowan forced a turnover just outside the box and quickly scored for the lead in the 16th minute. They had another chance ring off the left post in the half.

North Central's difference maker, Aidan Chaparro, finally broke through for the Indians early in the second half when he drove out of the midfield into the box and cut back on his defender, creating contact to earn a penalty he converted moments later to level things up in the 48th.

Shadle nearly reclaimed the lead later in the half only to see another fantastic effort smack off the woodwork, allowing North Central to grab the victory when Pasquale Kelay put away a loose ball in the box with just three minutes remaining.

Earlier in the doubleheader at Albi, it was all Tigers as Lewis & Clark dominated the meeting with University thanks to a hat-trick from Brennan Murphy en route to a 5-0 win. Both assisted by Bailey Rosenau, Murphy struck in the 12th minute and again in the 20th for a commanding early lead. A free kick from Jared Mahaffey pinged around in the box four minutes before the break before being knocked home by Ethan Sieveke. Four minutes into the second half Murphy finished his hat-trick - the first in GSL this season - on a ball from Mehaffey. Tyler Koffinke rounded things out by putting away a rebound in the 65th.

Elsewhere, Jake Levine tacked a second half brace onto a one-goal halftime advantage to blank Mt Spokane 3-0 and Mead cruised to a 4-1 win at Rogers. Peter Weller doubled the lead just before halftime and pushed it to three from the spot at the hour mark. Another penalty made it four ten minutes later before Rogers got on the board in the 72nd.

The night wrapped up at Gonzaga Prep with a tight affair that went finished in favor of the visiting Saxons with Max Thompson converting a penalty in the 55th for the 1-0 Ferris win.

HS Daily - 3.22.17: Eisenhower, Walla Walla make early waves

The bottom two sides in the Mid-Columbia Conference and Columbia Basin Big Nine in 2016 ago are off to great starts this spring. Walla Walla, with a win over Kamiakin Tuesday, has already picked up two wins in three games to start the season after going winless a year ago. Eisenhower, meanwhile, topped last year's co-leader Davis to sit atop the CBBN with Wenatchee at 2-0.

The results came on a night full of close contests with four of the seven going beyond regulation and another decided by one goal. Walla Walla's winner from Elejandro Espana broke a scoreless deadlock with just two minutes remaining in overtime and Kennewick got the better of Hanford, 2-1, on a penalty converted by Eddie Castillo in the fifth minute of OT.

A third MCC match went further with Southridge prevailing in a shootout after a dramatic 2-2 draw at Chiawana. Down two on a goal and assist from Jason Aragon, the Suns' Azuka Osokogu found Emilio Sanchez and Jorge Mendez to erase the lead.

In a similar comeback to force a shootout, Wenatchee gave up a first half goal and were down two at the hour mark before goals from Luis Navarrete and Matt Springer over the next 10 minutes brought things level en route to a 3-2 overtime victory against West Valley in the CBBN.

Eisenhower knocked off Davis with a dramatic finish, getting the winner two minutes from time via Johnny Ramirez with Robert Gonzalez earning the shutout.

Pasco, meanwhile, rolled to an easy win against Richland with Jesus Meraz-Rodriguez scoring twice. Eastmont rolled to a 4-2 victory at Moses Lake courtesy of a 3-0 lead at the break.

Things were not quite so close in the Great Northern League and Northeast A League with 35 goals in four games.

Cheney downed visiting Clarkston 3-1 in the closest match of the day while their GNL counterparts East Valley downed last year's champion, Pullman, 5-2 in a showdown of the top two from a year ago. Dmitriy Kozenya scored twice for the Knights for the only brace in the two games.

Alberto Cisneros tallied four goals and an assist while leading Colville to a 9-2 NEA win against Riverside and Lakeside drubbed Deer Park 12-1. Field conditions pushed the Medical Lake at Newport game back to Friday.

HS Daily - 3.20.17: Wenatchee tops champ Sunnyside in CBBN opener

Third-place finishers in the regular season a year ago, Wenatchee nabbed a 2-0 home victory Friday evening on the Columbia Basin Big Nine opening night against reigning regular season champion Sunnyside while Davis, runners-up last season, eeked out a 1-0 result against visiting West Valley, who were second from bottom in 2016.

In the Great Northern League openers, the bottom two from a year ago also earned wins. Cheney snared a win via shootout against defending champion Pullman on the road after a scoreless affair and Clarkston, last-place finishers a year ago, topped West Valley, 5-4, in an overtime decision.

In the Mid-Columbia Conference, both contests Friday were decided in overtime while Saturday's fixtures were starkly different as one was decided by a lone goal and the other was a one-sided meeting.

The surprisingly poor performances from the GSL 3A schools in preseason continued Friday with all three games against lower classification opponents not concluding in their favor. Mt Spokane was edged 3-2 by Medical Lake and Rogers - a day after getting the better of NC - was blanked 1-0 by Lakeside. Shadle Park, meanwhile, played to a 3-3 draw in Pullman, coming up short in a tiebreaker shootout. Ferris lost in a shootout to University, which finished last among the 4A contingent a year ago and Gonzaga Prep fell at home, 2-0, to Eastmont. Both sides were mid-table in their leagues a year ago.

On Monday, four GSL sides will get in one last warm-up before the season kicks off on Wednesday with a full slate.

NE Oregon school Hermiston hoping to join MCC

This weekend a major groundbreaking decision for high school athletics in Washington could be made when the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association's executive board convenes for a meeting at its Renton headquarters. One of the items on the agenda for the March 18-19 meetings is the application from northeastern Oregon's Hermiston High School to join the Mid-Columbia Conference, featuring the seven Tri-Cities area schools and Walla Walla.

Facing a significant boost in its enrollment in the coming years, the already travel-burdened school is facing a rise to the highest classification in the Oregon School Activities Association that would put the school in the Mt Hood Conference, which is currently comprised of eight Portland-area schools that are an average of approximately 180 miles away. The change would double its annual mileage and significantly increase the number of academic hours missed - potentially up to a third of their classes in a month.

Though the OSAA will not finalize its plan for reclassification until October, none of the options are particularly fitting for Hermiston, which currently plays in the Columbia River Conference. The conference includes Hood River, Pendleton and The Dalles for an average round trip of 170 miles. A round trip to Richland, the furthest school of the MCC would be approximately 90 miles by comparison.

Hermiston's process to make the move began in earnest in January when the OSAA listened to their idea and provided a letter of support for the school to move forward and discuss the proposition with the WIAA. In late January the WIAA executive board heard their proposal and tabled further discussion to this weekend's meeting, where there is no guarantee of a vote. To approve the move, both associations would need to amend bylaws to allow the school to finalize an affiliation change.

One of the early steps, though, was finding a league to welcome them - and it took little convincing for the MCC to open its doors.

“We met as a conference and voted, and it was a unanimous vote that if the WIAA were to allow them in that we would accept them,” Kamiakin athletic director and conference president Casey Gant told the Seattle Times. “We had a couple of things we talked about. One is that we already play them in a majority of our sports anyway; that wasn’t going to be a change. … The other thing is, we started to look at the situation that they’re in and we were pretty sympathetic.”

Currently at 1,240 for enrollment, Hermiston would likely come in as the smallest school in the MCC depending on how big a boom the school's growth spurt is. The potential bar for 6A in Oregon is 1,330 (or 1,165 if OSSA decides to go to just five classifications) and the school is expected to surpass that number in the near future. Hermiston would, essentially, be a perfect fit for the MCC as it would be the conference's fourth 3A team (Hanford moved up this academic year).

“I believe we are still facing an uphill battle with the WIAA, and we completely understand if they are hesitant,” Hermiston athletic director Larry Usher told the East Oregonian. “Something new is not always easy for any group, but this is about our kids in Hermiston and this uphill battle is certainly worth it. We have the full support of every school across the river in the Mid-Columbia Conference and certainly hope that pulls some weight with their association.”

Postseason RPI Rankings Also A Factor

In addition to travel burden and missed class time, another significant reason behind the move is the ranking systems both states utilize. Hermiston has essentially been penalized in recent years in the OSAA system as non-league games against nearby MCC schools and lower classification in-state opponents did not count toward the OSAA's Colley Rating. On the other side of the border, the MCC schools are also now subject to similar rules under a newly instituted RPI system where games against out-of-state opponents will not count.

If Hermiston were to remain in the OSAA, they would need to schedule even more games against distant opponents to strengthen their rating for postseason seeding or continue to play more lower-level schools in eastern Oregon such as Umatilla (3A), McLoughlin (4A) or LaGrande (4A) because MCC schools will most likely choose to play more non-league contests against Columbia Basin Big Nine or Greater Spokane League schools.

Precedence in the NW - Idaho Included in Discussion

According to the Seattle Times, the two state associations also involved the Idaho High School Activities Association in the discussions - via a conference call - and spoke with other state associations that have undertaken similar arrangements.

Five schools (Coleville, Needles, North Tahoe, South Tahoe, Truckee) along the eastern California border are playing in the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association along with a school in the southeast corner of the state (San Pasqual Valley). Beaver Dam HS - located in the northwest corner of Arizona - also plays in the NIAA. Also, a Mexican school is a member of the Arizona Interscholastic Association.

“They don’t have any downside,” WIAA executive director Mike Colbrese told the Seattle Times of those examples. “They say it’s working.” However, that was countered by OSAA committee chairman Curt Shelley, who - based 'on a story he heard' - said to the Oregonian, “You were well-received by your league, but the state didn’t care about you too much once you won a state championship. If you can be a doormat, then you’re well-received."

Other examples aside, the big concern was precedence for Oregon, Washington and Idaho, where crossing state lines could definitely be beneficial for other schools along the western border.

“Certainly as a member school our first priority is to include them as an Oregon school,” OSAA Executive Director Peter Weber told the Hermiston Herald, “but we’re a voluntary organization, we don’t require a school to remain here. But I think the bigger potential question is what does it mean to Washington to bring an Oregon school in?

“I think it could set a precedent and open some doors, and we’ve started some conversation with us and Idaho to come up with criteria to consider if this happens again.”

“It’s not the kind of decision you want an executive board shooting from the hip on,” Hermiston athletic director Larry Usher said in the Tri-City Herald. “The hurdle we have to get over is showing how this is different from any other Oregon or Idaho schools trying to come into the WIAA, or, for that matter, a Washington school trying to leave the state to go play somewhere else.”

An example of where crossing the border could play a beneficial role for Idaho schools would certainly be in the panhandle where there are only a handful of schools in each classification. They would naturally pair up well with schools in eastern Washington, where the number of schools per classification are dwarfed in comparison to those in central and western Washington. Each tier would go from four or five schools per group to 8-10, which would be more in line with their peers to the west (see district membership tables below).
