Week Two HS Round-Up: Shootouts decide matches for Ferris, Moses Lake

Ferris celebrates shootout win with goalkeeper James Mann
The Greater Spokane League kicked off league play with a full slate of games over the week. Ferris went the distance in both contests to earn a split on the week. Meanwhile, in the CBB9, Moses Lake rallied from deficits in both games to come away with a pair of shootout victories.

The Saxons held the lead in both games in the first week of GSL play, but a pair of late equalizers forced them into going the distance in both contests. Eric Hollenbaugh scored in the 65th against visiting Mt Spokane on Wednesday, but Tyler Smith tied it up with two minutes left for the Wildcats, who prevailed 6-5 in the shootout to nab the 2-1 victory.

Two days later at Mead it was an identical replay for Ferris. Hollenbaugh put the Saxons on the board 14 minutes in with a 22-yard free kick that smacked off the underside of the bar and crossed the line before bouncing out of the goal.

Mead repeatedly had chances to pull even, including one that was cleared off the line by Evan Giem; but it was a second chance opportunity on a corner kick with two minutes remaining that was finally put away by Hayden DelPizzo. In the shootout, Saxons goalkeeper James Mann stopped Mead's fourth attempt as they went on to win the tiebreaker for a 2-1 victory.

The near-victory for Mead would have marked the second rally for the Panthers on the week as they came back from two down at home Wednesday. Down two at the break, Peter Weller took control of the contest in the second half with three unanswered goals, tallying two minutes in to get the Panthers on the board. Michael McLeod set up the next two to come away with the win.

Like Ferris, Moses Lake was also the center of the drama in the Columbia Basin Big Nine last week. On Tuesday they fell behind at home to last season's last-place finisher West Valley, but Erik Vega answered on a ball from Anthony Cortez in the 25th minute. The two remained deadlocked through the rest of the contest with the Chiefs taking the victory in the shootout.

On Friday the Chiefs had to rally from an even bigger hole on the road with Jorge Amador giving Eisenhower a two-goal advantage after just 15 minutes. Daniel Sinchuck scored a minute later and Cortez tied it up in the 17th for Moses Lake. The Chiefs actually took the lead before the break with a goal from Isaac Martinez, but had to settle for a 6-5 win in the shootout for a 4-3 victory in the contest.

West Valley nearly upset Davis as well, pulling even at home Friday in the close contest before Michael Raya scored a second goal to give Davis a 2-1 road win. In a showdown of last year's top two sides, defending league champion Wenatchee prevailed on the road, 1-0, via a penalty kick with eight minutes remaining at Sunnyside Friday.

In the Mid-Columbia Conference the Pasco Bulldogs, nearly suffered their first league loss in over a year. Visiting Chiawana, third last season, took the defending champions to a shootout before the tiebreaker finished in favor of the Bulldogs for a 2-1 victory. On Saturday, Pasco handily defeated visiting Kennewick, last-season's runners-up, 4-1 with two goals each from Edwin Aquino and Jesus Meraz-Rodriguez.

INWsn's EASTERN WASHINGTON THREE STARS - Week 2

INWsn's CENTRAL WASHINGTON THREE STARS - Week 2

Week One HS Round-Up: Defending CBB9 champs fall in opener

The Columbia Basin Big Nine kicked off league play Friday throughout central Washington, joining the Mid-Columbia Conference and Great Northern League, who kicked off league play earlier in the week.

In the CCB9, last season's league champion Wenatchee were handed a loss in their first game of the campaign in a shootout defeat at home after a 2-2 stalemate against visiting Davis, which was fourth a year ago. The outcome was a replay of last year's league opener between the two in which Davis won at home 1-0, giving Wenatchee its lone loss.

Another surprising result in the CCB9 was West Valley, last place a year ago, answering both goals from Eastmont and getting a last minute winner to down last season's third place finisher.

In the MCC, last year's unbeaten champion Pasco dominated last place finisher Walla Walla 5-0 in the opener, but in a showdown of second and third place finishers, Chiawana delivered a statement with a 5-0 victory over the 2015 runners-up.

In eastern Washington, the GNL continued as the only league with official play. The results were no surprise based on last year's table, but Saturday did provide a historic moment as Pullman registered the school's first-ever victory on the road at Cheney in the long history of the two foes with Matt Winchell hitting from about 18 yards for the 2-1 overtime victory.

INWsn's CENTRAL WASHINGTON THREE STARS - Week 1

Edwin Aquina (Pasco) :: Assisted on both goals in a 2-1 overtime win at Richland to avoid the upset for the defending champions, and then tallied an assist in the 5-0 win against visiting Walla Walla.

Austin Stromme (West Valley) :: Scored the game-winning tally with just over a minute remaining to give West Valley, the bottom team in 2015, a 3-2 victory in the opener against Eastmont.

Shambel West (Chiawana) :: In a pair of blowout wins on the road, West tallied three assists in a 4-0 victory at Southridge and then provided two goals and an assist in the 5-0 victory at Kennewick.

INWsn's EASTERN WASHINGTON THREE STARS - Week 1

Sam Druffel (Pullman) :: Scored the second goal in the 2-0 win against visiting West Valley Thursday and tallied a goal and assist in the 2-1 road win against Cheney Saturday.

Will Pitzer (Pullman) :: Allowed just one goal, playing a half in the 2-0 home win Thursday against West Valley and playing the entire contest Saturday in the 2-1 win at Cheney.

Matt Winchell (Pullman) :: Tallied a goal and assist in a 2-0 victory at home versus West Valley Thursday and repeated the feat on the road Saturday in Cheney for a 2-1 victory.

High School Boys kick off 2016 campaigns

Midway into March and the spring boys soccer season has begun. The past two weeks have been filled with plenty of non-league action, but the Great Northern League (2A) and Mid-Columbia Conference (4A/3A) hit the fields for their first official league games earlier this week.

In league play down in the Columbia Basin, last year's undefeated MCC champion Pasco narrowly escaped an upset from Richland (sixth in 2015) in the opener, grabbing a 2-1 victory in overtime on the road. Kennewick, second place finishers a year ago, also had a close call in a 3-2 affair at Walla Walla, which finished last in the MCC in 2015.

Up north in the greater-Spokane area, last year's champion Pullman picked up right where they left off by blanking West Valley while Cheney and East Valley battled to a scoreless draw with the Knights taking the contest in the shootout.

Among the non-league games was a showdown of league champions as CBB9's Wenatchee played a visit to GSL champion and state finalist Central Valley. The Bears blanked the visitors but fell the following day to fellow CBB9 member Eastmont, who dominated Shadle the day before on their trip to Spokane.

For a refresher on the final 2015 standings, scroll to the bottom of the post.
