Big Sky Tonight 9.30.16: Idaho, Idaho State win as Griz, Eags earn ties

The Idaho Vandals gained a bit of ground back up on Eastern Washington Friday in the Big Sky Conference thanks to a 2-0 home win in a rematch of last year's conference tournament final against Northern Colorado. Meanwhile, league leading Eastern Washington and Montana played to draws on the road. The Bengals of Idaho State also ended a 13-game Big Sky losing streak.

Eastern Washington 0 :: 0 Portland State #####

Mallory Taylor made five stops and defender M'Kenna Hayes made a huge game-saving header off the line in the 59th minute for the Eagles defense, which has posted shutouts in two of their first three Big Sky outings and allowed just one goal. The hosts frustrated Eastern's offense, only allowing four shots on the day while the Vikings took 14.   MORE [+]

Northern Colorado 0 :: 2 Idaho #####

The visiting Bears returned to Moscow where they captured the Big Sky title in penalties after a 1-1 draw against regular season champion Idaho, who had won the previous match in Colorado 2-0 earlier in the season. A year ago, the Vandals took the lead early in the 12th minute only to see the Bears answer in the second half. This year, the contest went into the second half scoreless before the Vandals got on the board... twice.

Clara Gomez set up the opening goal in the 56th minute when she ran down a long ball from Kelly Dopke into the corner before sending the ball in to Madison Moore, who blasted a shot off the post. The rebound, though, found Megan Goo for the go-ahead goal.

Looking to avoid what happened in the final last November, the Vandals added a second goal immediately within three minutes to take control of the contest. This time it was Josilyn Daggs hitting Elexis Schlossarek, who scored in the final, as she flew up the sideline, allowing her to freshman feed Emma Eddy for the insurance tally.  MORE [+]

Montana 1 :: 1 Sacramento State #####

Two minutes into the contest the Grizzlies avoided being stuck in a hole on the road when Chanelle Pederson was in position to make a goal-line clearance after Kayla Collins had beaten goalkeeper Kailey Norman one-on-one. A shot from Ashlee Pedersen (Spokane, WA / Shadow WFT) in the 51st minute helped break the stalemate when the rebound off the save fell to Madison Adams for her second goal in as many games. Norman made five saves in regulation and seven overall, but the hosts pulled even with four minutes remaining when Kassidy Kellogg nodded in a cross from Mikayla Reed.  MORE [+]

North Dakota 1 :: 2 Idaho State #####

After a rough start last week in which they were outscored 5-0 on opening weekend, the Bengals welcomed North Dakota, picked in the preseason to finish at the bottom of the table with ISU, and ended their 13-game losing streak in Big Sky play that dated back to the 2014 tournament final.

Twelve minutes into the match Nikolina Musto gathered a loose ball and beat a defender to score the opening goal of the contest. The Fighting Hawks, though, answered via Veronica Kessler in the 24th and the two sides went deadlocked deep into the second half.

With 11 minutes left on the clock Tristen Spooner launched a lengthy free kick from the left midfield touchline that rebounded inside the box before finding its way to Meaghan Bare (Coeur d'Alene, ID) for the game-winner.  MORE [+]

Northern Arizona 1 :: 3 Weber State #####

The Wildcats used a penalty converted by Morgan Quarnberg in the 10th minute and an own goal in the 22nd to take command of the contest in the first half. Three minutes after the intermission Paige Stevens pushed the lead to three on a breakaway. Lindsay Doyle spoiled the shutout in the 87th minute.

HS DAILY - 9.30.16: Shootouts, Big 9 upsets highlight the night

Two of the three contests in the Northeast A League went to shootouts Thursday with Medical Lake escaping an upset at Freeman and Lakeside doing the same at Riverside. Meanwhile, minus injured standout striker Riley Martinson, Deer Park continues to dominate things, posting a 4-1 victory on the road in Colville.

The two matches, meanwhile, in the Great Northern League were both shutouts as Cheney became the first side to blank Clarkston and East Valley once again dominated Pullman.

Out in the Mid-Columbia Conference and Columbia Basin Big Nine, the there were a few of eye-openers. In the MCC, Kamiakin survived a scare on the road versus Pasco, winning in a shootout, to keep close to unbeaten Southridge while in the CBBN Wenatchee and Davis were not as fortunate. Wenatchee fell to one-win Eastmont in a shootout on the road while Davis were narrowly topped at home by one-win Sunnyside, giving unbeaten West Valley a two-game advantage in the table over the rest of the field, that features three teams - Wenatchee, Moses Lake and Davis - tied with three wins.

Here's a look around the action from Thursday night...

NEA #####

Medical Lake 2-1 SO Freeman: The Cardinals took the lead 22 minutes in on a goal from Jaxyn Farmen, but Claire Love connected with Luhr with two minutes left in the first half. They went scoreless the rest of the way with Medical Lake prevailing 4-3 in a shootout.

Deer Park 4-1 Colville: Emmy Moore put Deer Park in front on the road 10 minutes in, but the Indians answered in the 20th via Keren Torres and things were level at halftime. Jessie Thomas scored two minutes after the break and Moore pushed the lead to two in the 47th for a quick, commanding advantage. McCoolough rounded out the scoring in the 68th.

Lakeside 3-2 SO Riverside: Jamie Conner set up the opening goal two minutes in by Taylor Yaws to give the hosts the lead but Lexi Torok evened things up in the second minute of the second half with Maddie Hall putting the Eagles in front just before the hour mark. Ava West tied things up for Riverside with five minutes left, but the Rams were unable to complete the upset, falling in the shootout.

GNL #####

East Valley 6-0 Pullman: It was over in a flash for the Greyhounds. Chloe Gellhaus set up goals from Shannon Frucci in the first minute and Elle Burland in the fourth for a two goal advantage. Frucci then set up Taryn Baxter in the 14th and Burland tallied her second in the 22nd. Sydney Moore made it a five goal first half with Gellhaus scoring the lone tally of the second period.

Cheney 2-0 Clarkston: Emma Scott put the Blackhawks on the board 12 minutes into the contest and Kailey Estrellado provided some insurance late in the contest for the visitors. Nicole Rowley and Melissa Aris combined for 12 saves in the shutout, the first Clarkston has suffered, to maintain first place for the Blackhawks.

MCC #####

Kamiakin 2-1 SO Pasco: Zyree Raban put the Bulldogs up 26 minutes into the contest to and took the lead to the break. The Braves finally pulled even in the 56th minute through Maddie Morgan, and the game was a stalemate the rest of the way. A save in the second round of the shootout for Kamiakin gave the Braves the 5-4 shootout victory.

Walla Walla 1-4 Hanford: Just three minutes into the contest, the Blue Devils grabbed the early lead when Reese Fewell found Lorena Ramirez for the opening strike and Walla Walla nearly took it to the break, but Hanford spoiled everything. The Falcons pulled even on a corner from Natalie Clossey with two minutes left in the first half and then grabbed the lead with a 30 yard chip over the keeper by Anabel Lin for the halftime advantage. Another corner in the 54th was knocked home by Blake Danna for a two goal advantage and Hanford's Ellie Harlow converted a penalty a short time later for a commanding lead.

CBBN #####

Eisenhower 3-7 Moses Lake: Christina Mullan found Abby Rathbun four minutes into the match and then Rathbun added two more for a three goal lead at the break, tallying the second in the 31st and the third off a deflection just before the break. In the second half Rathbun struck for her fourth and Naileah Nunez pushed the lead to five. Mullan made the game 6-0 before Haley Wammock got Eisenhower on the board in the 63rd. Cora Bruneel converted from the spot for the Chiefs and Wammock struck again for Ike before things finished up.

Wenatchee 1-2 SO Eastmont: The two sides battled through a scoreless first half before Wenatchee grabbed the initial lead midway through in the second half, but Vanessa Valdez struck from about 45 yards out with six minutes remaining in the contest to send the match ultimately to penalties where Kalea Bokma made a stop in the shootout to give Eastmont the win.

Sunnyside 1-0 Davis: The one-win Grizzlies registered the biggest upset of the night across the region with a victory against 3-1 Davis. No other details (including Reg/OT/SO status) are available at this time.

LD COLLEGE ROUND-UP: Whitworth & Whitman men battled western foes to extra time

The story of the weekend may be what transpired in western Washington in the Northwest Conference over the weekend as the Whitworth and Whitman men both traveled to the other side of the Cascades to face Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound. Three of the four contests went to overtime and Whitman came away, arguably, as the biggest winners with a victory over the Lutes and a draw against Puget Sound that has put the duo and league favorite Whitworth mid-table after four games.

Whitworth's counterparts also had a great week as the Lady Pirates downed regional rival Whitman 2-1 and blanked Willamette for a pair of wins.

In the Cascade Conference, Eastern Oregon women posted a pair of shutouts on the road in Montana for a draw and a victory, opening their Cascade Conference campaign with four consecutive shutouts. Carroll, which the Mountaineers played to a scoreless draw with, have started similarly with a matching 3-0-1 record, but have allowed one goal.

On the men's side in the CCC, Great Falls swept the weekend while Eastern Oregon and Carroll split. The Argos and Saints both topped visiting Warner Pacific with UGF also getting a victory against the Mountaineers, who won at Carroll.

MSU-Billings two sides also had a great week in the GNAC. The women posted a victory and a scoreless draw on the week while the men picked up two wins and a draw, scoring a dozen goals in the process.

HS DAILY - 9.29.16: Ferris downs LC in shootout

One-sided contests continue to be the norm in the Greater Spokane League as the 4A sides continue facing the 3A schools in the early part of the season. The result after three match days is a trio of teams with perfect records and double-digit goal differentials. That trio - Mead, Central Valley and Gonzaga Prep - won their three matches Wednesday by a combined 21-1, though the Bullpups were in the closest contest in a 3-1 victory over University.

In the only close contest of the day, Ferris finally registered its first victory by downing Lewis & Clark in a shootout after a 2-2 draw.

Here's a look around the action from Wednesday night...

GSL #####

Lewis & Clark 2-3 SO Ferris:  Based on results coming into the contest, it was a bit of a surprise that Ferris was able to pick up its first win in league play against Lewis & Clark, but the two sides tallied twice each in the first half and went deadlocked the rest of the way to a shootout that the Saxons took 5-4. Yacine Bitibale put Ferris in the lead six minutes into the contest, but the Tigers rallied with Katelyn Kenney scoring the equalizer in the 17th minute and the go-ahead goal in the 22nd. Rebekah Reason set up both goals. Five minutes later Alexis Murphy made things even once again.

Gonzaga Prep 3-1 University:  The Bullpups took an early lead six minutes in through Trudi Timperman but University took things to the break on even terms with Julia Adair converting a penalty in the 31st. Darby Doyle put G-Prep back in front four minutes after intermission and Timperman converted a penalty in the 54th that gave the visitors a little space.

Mt Spokane 5-1 Shadle Park:  The Wildcats scored their first goals of the season in rolling to their second win with the first having come via shootout in a scoreless draw. Sierra Poquette put Mt Spokane on the board first 10 minutes in and Payton Stiles converted a penalty in the 29th. Allie Baribault pushed the lead to three two minutes later. In the second half, the Highlanders finally found their first goal of the campaign in the 62nd via Katie Benjamin, but Stiles connected with Ally Gockley in the 75th and Baribault netted her second in the 80th to cap the game.

Rogers 0-11 Central Valley:  Kailyn LaBrosse scored twice in the first nine minutes and McKenzie Claypool tallied two goals and two assists in the big victory. Kalie Crouch and Robertson also tallied hat-tricks in the contest.

Mead 7-0 North Central:  In the first 11 minute Claire Neder had two goals and Cheris Brown a goal and an assist in giving the Panthers a three goal advantage. Natalie Martell then scored consecutive goals for a five goal lead at the break. Kaylyn Thompson and Sarah Wilson rounded out the scoring in the second half.

NWAC East Tonight 9.28.16: Home sides dominate the day

The top three women's sides - Spokane, Walla Walla and North Idaho - were at home Wednesday and took care of business with each posting two-goal victories on the day. On the men's side, Spokane and Walla Walla were victorious at home while North Idaho used a home victory to slide into the top three.

WOMEN  ##############

Wednesday, September 28

Yakima Valley 0 :: 2 Spokane
The Sasquatch, with a growing injury list, still managed to dominate the contest, but the win would not come until after a scoreless first half in which the crossbar and several goalline stops kept them off the board. Two minutes into the second half Maddy Boyd (Spokane, WA) took ball from Anisha Nicholson (Post Falls, ID) and put it away with what was her first shot of the game. Ten minutes later Jenna Sullens (Spokane, WA) finished a ball from Stephanie Overland (Moses Lake, WA) to provide some insurance. It was her eighth of the divisional campaign. Molly Webster was called upon to make just one save for the shutout.

Treasure Valley 1 :: 3 North Idaho
Jocelyn Cook-Cox (Spokane, WA) led the Cardinals to the victory with all three goals. She struck just four minutes in and the hosts held onto that lead until the Chukars pulled even just two minutes into the second half via Madison Wells (Nampa, ID). It didn't take Cook-Cox long though to answer. She put the Cardinals back in front in the 54th and completed her hat-trick just two minutes later.

Wenatchee Valley 0 :: 2 Walla Walla
The Warriors used a pair of first half goals to grab the win. Kylee Platt scored with the assistance of Sam Filingeri-Oleson (Yakima, WA) in the 31st minute and Tate Kautzky (Richland, WA) doubled things two minutes before the break. Jeanette Alvarado (Moses Lake, WA) made three saves for the shutout.

Columbia Basin 4 :: 0 Blue Mountain
Facing the Timberwolves, the CBC Hawks were the only team on the day to score four and win by more than two goals. Madison Gatherum (Richland, WA) scored the only goal of the first half in the 39th minute and went on to finish with a hat-trick. She pushed the lead to two in the 63rd courtesy of Starcia Deponte, who also set up the first goal and went on to score the third herself in the 76th. Gatherum finished things off in the 78th and Kelsey Kerker (Helena, MT) recorded the shutout. The four goals more than doubled their tally of three goals in their four previous divisional matches.

Jorge Llerenas (Pasco, WA) made six saves for the shutout and Jorge Villegas (Sunnyside, WA) nearly had one as well with eight saves at the other end.

Treasure Valley 0 :: 2 North Idaho
Muganza Katanga (Boise, ID) put the Cardinals on the board in the 22nd minute and they made the one-goal advantage hold until Katanga netted a second with four minutes left for insurance. Garrett Boyce (Coeur d'Alene, ID) made two saves for the clean sheet.

HS DAILY - 9.28.16: Southridge slips by Kamiakin to remain unbeaten

One postponed game from a week ago aside, the Mid-Columbia Conference hit the mid-season point Tuesday evening, and the night was highlighted by a first-place showdown between unbeaten Southridge and 5-1 Kamiakin. The two sides battled to a draw through regulation and overtime, but the shootout went decisively to the Suns, allowing them to finish 7-0 through the first half of the campaign.

In the Spokane area leagues, the night was highlighted by a back-and-forth contest between Northeast A League contenders Medical Lake and Lakeside that saw the visiting Cardinals snare a 3-2 victory in the final minute of overtime.

Here's a look around the action from Tuesday night...

NEA #####

In the marquee match-up of the night, the Lakeside Eagles were looking to pull back in the title race with a match-up against Medical Lake, and the two played a back-and-forth affair that was just moments away from a shootout when Medical Lake snagged a 3-2 win. It looked like the Cardinals were going to take the early lead in the 17th minute on a penalty, but the attempt clanged off the upper right corner of the woodwork. Within the next minute the Eagles were celebrating at the other end when Lexi Torok scored her sixth goal of the NEA campaign on a ball from Payton Stueckle.

The visitors, though, answered two minutes later with a goal from Jayda Noble that ended a six-goal streak for teammate Makayla Geiger that spanned three games. Geiger, however, scored the next two in dramatic fashion. The first came on a bouncing ball well out on the right flank where she struck the ball out of the air, sending it soaring over the goalkeeper that was too far out to keep it from dropping in under the bar in the 36th minute for a Cardinal lead at the intermission.

Six minutes into the second half Hannah Mitchell fed Alyssa Figy to pull the two sides level and thing remained that way until the final minute in overtime. Though Lakeside was continually threatening to score the winner, Geiger struck for the winner when a long ball up the left from Noble drew the keeper out and Geiger beat her to it, sending a slow roller from about 14 yards out over the line for the victory and putting her in double digits for goals on the season.

Deer Park rolled to a 4-0 at Newport with Donaldson scoring twice in the first half and Courtney Stark hitting for two in the second half. Rowenna Nelson recorded her third shutout in NEA play.

Riverside surprised visiting Freeman 2-1 to earn their second victory of the season, getting a first half goal from Tayler Moug on a ball from Jamie Conner in the 11th minute. The two combined in the 54th as well with Moug giving the Rams what proved to be the winning strike. Ysabella Panzeri scored for Freeman in the 63rd, but the Scotties were unable to complete the rally.

MCC #####

Southridge kept its unbeaten record intact, but needed its second shootout win of the season to remain in front of second place Kamiakin after battling the Braves to a 1-1 stalemate. Kayleen Sambrano put the Suns up at home in the first half of the first-place showdown, but Kamiakin answered via Aaliyah Valladares early in the second half. The two sides remained even the rest of the way, sending the contest to the tiebreaker, where Southridge came away with a 3-0 decision. At the midway point, though, the pair of 3A schools still lead their 4A counterparts in the MCC table.

The Pasco Bulldogs took the lead 16 minutes into the contest against visiting Walla Walla and doubled the lead following a blocked shot six minutes later. The Blue Devils answered with a goal from Krystal Roberts with five minutes left before the break, but were not able to find an equalizer in the second period as Pasco held on for a 2-1 victory.

In a mid-table battle, Tory Romero scored 10 minutes into the match for the Hanford Falcons and Dani Mendoza doubled the lead in the 21st minute on a free kick to blank Richland 2-0.

Though they dropped a shootout decision last week to Hanford, Chiawana's Summer Yates being away for a US Under-16 National Team camp in the Netherlands has not affected the Riverhawks too much as witnessed by Tuesday night's 6-0 blowout victory over Kennewick. Ruthie Edrington scored twice and added an assist. Also leading the way were Avery Bond (goal and assist) and Lindsey Ellingson (goal and two assists). Kelsee Winston posted the shutout.

The Riverhawks will probably get Yates back soon as the camp ran from September 16-27 and included three matches. They opened with a 3-3 draw against the U17 Netherlands NT in which Yates gave the US a two-goal lead with a penalty. They went on to tie academy side CTO Amsterdam 0-0 and post a 2-1 victory Monday against academy team CTO Eindhoven.

CBBN #####

In the marquee contest of the night in the Columbia Basin Big Nine, Wenatchee and Moses Lake played to a scoreless stalemate Tuesday evening, though a shot late in overtime from Moses Lake's Morgon Skone, who hit the crossbar earlier in extra time, led to confusion as to whether the ball was in or out before going through a hole in the net. Wenatchee took the tiebreaker, 4-3.

Eastmont, meanwhile, picked up their first victory of the Big 9 season with a 2-0 victory on the road against Sunnyside with goals from Maddy Chandler and Kara Pinard.

West Valley dominated in 10-1 victory at Eisenhower with Kendall Sharp tallying twice late in the contest to complete a hat-trick. Lauryn Peters scored two of the first three goals and Jordan Karnes scored twice in the second half.

GNL #####

The Cheney Blackhawks headed south and posted a 2-0 victory in Pullman with Madison O'Callaghan scoring five minutes before the break and Gabby Nguyen striking a minute into the second half. Nicole Rowley registered her second shutout in the GNL.

The Clarkston Bantams went north looking to stay in the hunt and left West Valley with a narrow 1-0 decision against the Eagles thanks to a 59th minute penalty conversion from Makinzie Packwood and eight saves from Katelyn Bittle. It was Packwood's seventh goal in the GNL. The result created a huge chasm between the top three and West Valley and Pullman at the bottom of the table.
