High School Girls Update - October 31: Halloween high school playoffs today

The last of the leagues that were in play wrapped things up on Thursday, and now everyone has entered the postseason (see brackets below). Most of the leagues feature postseason contests for Halloween, which will certainly lead to some cheesy, ghoulish headlines should surprises play out.

There were no real surprises in the 4A Columbia Basin Big Nine this week, though Eastmont was able to finish third with a split on the week while Moses Lake dropped a pair of extremely tight contests at home, dropping a wild 4-3 affair to Davis and a coming up short in a penalty shootout after a scoreless draw against Wenatchee, who handed them their biggest loss earlier in the year (5-0). As expected, West Valley finished perfect and with an eye-opening finale at home, drubbing last-place Eisenhower with 15 goals. League-leading scorer Caitlin Quaempts only added a goal and assist on the day to her tally to finish with 15 goals and nine assists on the year, unofficially. Her teammate Kendra Hanses was the second-leading scorer with 13 goals.

On Saturday, the Big Nine hits the field for what it calls play-in games to determine what two sides will continue to have a chance at the second seed to state from the league.

Meanwhile in the 1A Northeast A League, things were a bit interesting in the final days. Deer Park, as expected, captured the league title with a lone defeat on their ledger. But it was the race for second that was intriguing, and finished in a three-way tie.

In addition to falling out of their chase for first, Freeman fell to third by the end of the season. It started when the Scotties were topped for a second time this season by Lakeside Tuesday. They then went into the final game looking to hold second. They used a strategy designed to shut down league scoring power Riley Martinson (26 goals), which worked as she was shutout for the first time this season other than a game she was suspended for. However, they could not contain the rest of the Deer Park Stags offense and fell 2-1 on a pair of goals from Jessie Thomas, the league's second best scorer with 13 tallies. The two losses allowed Lakeside and Riverside to pull even and force a three-way tiebreaker that saw Lakeside (3-1 against the other two) finish second for a first round bye and Freeman (2-2) third. Freeman and Riverside will host the opening playoff games Saturday.

One classification up in 2A, the Great Northern League started postseason play Thursday with a pair of contests that saw no surprises. Second-place West Valley and Clarkston advanced to Saturday's contest that will see the winner move onto the district final and a guaranteed state berth. The Bantoms gave West Valley issues this season, going to overtime in the first game before falling 2-1 and playing the Eagles to a scoreless draw in the third meeting before dropping the penalty tiebreaker. Both were in Clarkston, though, with West Valley prevailing 2-0 at home in the second game.

** CHECK OUT BRACKETS BELOW **

The 3A district playoffs are nearly complete.

Mt Spokane handily claimed the title out of the GSL as expected, downing North Central 4-1. Both move onto regionals.

Down in the Mid-Columbia Conference, the third-seeded Kamiakin Braves upset second-seeded Hanford by a big 5-1 scoreline to advance to their district final and ensure a spot in the regionals with Southridge, which they face Saturday. Though they were only a game back in the table and fell in a shootout in their last meeting after a 2-2 draw, the Braves did post a similar 4-0 victory earlier in the season against Hanford.

Both league's wrap up their 4A district playoffs Saturday.

The brackets down south played out according to seeding with a pair of one-sided affairs to set up Chiawana and Richland, who both advance to regionals, playing for the district title. Chiawana narrowly took the first regular season contest 3-2 but eased past Richland 4-1 just a week ago.

Third-seeded Ferris nipped league runners-up University 2-1 in GSL action Thursday night to ensure themselves a spot in the regionals, facing Gonzaga Prep Saturday in the district final. The unbeaten Bullpups survived a scare of their own, going to a shootout for the second time this season. The fourth seed and reigning two-time state champion Bears of Central Valley were the first team to shutout Prep this season, playing the GSL champs to a scoreless stalemate before falling in the shootout. University gets a second shot at securing a regional berth Saturday, but will have to get past a CV side looking to find a path back to the state tournament to defend their titles. Gonzaga defeated Ferris 2-1 two weeks ago while the Bears and Titans still have something to settle after a scoreless draw  October 7 went in favor of CV in the tiebreaker shootout.

NAIA Cascade Conference Round-Up: Playoff fields taking shape

Carroll locked up the regular season title on the women's side in the first season of the newly expanded league with a pair of victories in western Oregon on the week and another Frontier side, Rocky Mountain College, secured the top spot on the mens side with a win and a draw on the road.

With a few more of the eight conference tournament berths still up for grabs going into this week's action, three other programs from the region are among the six teams that had secured berths as of last week's play with College of Idaho, Eastern Oregon and Rocky Mountain headed to the postseason.

Seeding is all that is left to be settled on the men's side with all entrants determined after last week's play. Great Falls, Carroll and the College of Idaho will be joining RMC in the postseason field.

Division II & III Round-Up: Whitworth men suffer first loss, MSUB sides split

The dominant Whitworth Pirates were handed their first NWC defeat last weekend, dropping a 2-0 contest on the road to second-place Pacific Lutheran that tightened up the race for the league championship going into the final weeks. They rebounded for a narrow victory the next day at Puget Sound in what is arguably their toughest road trip annually.

On the ladies side of things, the Whitworth women played to a pair of draws to build themselves a three-game unbeaten run while their regional foe Whitman is continuing to find semi-positive results despite a lack of offense, getting a win and a draw that makes them 1-1-5 in their last seven outings.

Meanwhile, in the GNAC it was an interesting week for MSU-BIllings on the road. The women and men combined for four 1-0 contests last weekend, each earning a split in their road trips.

The Northwest Nazarene also split, dropping the second game to Seattle Pacific, which continues to hold onto the league lead. On the ladies side Central Washington tied third-place Seattle Pacific and defeated Simon Fraser to keep themselves in the hunt for third in the conference.

Here's a recap of Division II & Division III action for last week

Barmes' Bullpups transformed to GSL champs in two years

Gonzaga Prep surprised everyone this season. Not only did the Bullpups end a three-year series of identical 5-4 records by reaching the top of the Greater Spokane League table, but they did so in convincing fashion by running the slate at 9-0.

Tonight, the ladies at G-Prep face the reigning two-time state and GSL champion Central Valley Bears in the district semifinals with a chance to lock up a state berth.

It was an abbreviated two-year process to get to this point for the program, however, under new coach Billy Barmes, who polished a team with promise into a championship side over the course of 14 months.

"I think part of it is we have a particularly good group of players from top to bottom and last year coming in (there was) a new coach, a new mindset for working hard every chance they get," Barmes said of what the difference was between the current 9-0 campaign was versus their three previous seasons.

"I think last year was definitely the growing pains year. We had some talent, but a very young group; couldn't put it together in some games we should have been competing in. It was that and them coming back knowing the expectations of me for this year. Man, they really, I think, the whole roster - each player - did what they needed to do to improve, and so this year is just the culmination of that. Just having a lot of committed and good players."

It did not necessarily look like that was going to be the case going into the season. The Bullpups lost their opener in Kennewick 5-1 to Kamiakin before rebounding for a 3-1 win against Idaho 5A side Post Falls, which went on to go winless this season in the IEL. They lost two more, dropping a one-goal contest to Sumner, a 3A tournament side last year, and falling 2-0 to Mt Spokane, which finished second in the league last year and is the league's perennial 3A powerhouse, in a non-league affair. Even 2A West Valley was even with Prep with eight minutes remaining before senior Larkin Russell scored twice for a 3-1 win.

"Larkin is obviously a special player. She has one mission in the game, and that is to get around the ball and affect the play because I know that if she can find the ball, she will either score goals or help create goals for us," Barmes said. "Same thing with junior Darby Doyle in there. The two of them just, wherever the ball is, one of the two is on it and the other is playing off and helping us get forward."

Russell, who returned to the squad after a two-year absence, and Doyle were among the league's best offensively. With eight goals in league play Russell finished one shy of Mead's Alea Acosta. Doyle, with seven assists according to INWsn's numbers, was second behind Alex Chambers of Mead.

The duo were part of an offensive unit that led the league with 37 goals this year, besting Mead's 35 and 34 from Ferris. More importantly, it was a vast boost from last year's paltry dozen, and complemented an excellent defensive effort.

Though 7-2 University boasted a stellar defense with four goals allowed and six shutouts, the Prep defense put forth a similarly impressive outing with six goals against and four shutouts.

"They are growing. As we are as a team, they are certainly growing in their consistency. Last year we had two sophomores, a freshman and a junior in our back line and this year its two juniors, a sophomore and a senior.

"We didn't start the season terribly organized. We had both of our centerbacks (starting cold) - one who doesn't play club soccer and the other one who had a broken toe all summer - so it took them a few games to really start connecting with each other like they did last year. We started off our season giving up five goals against Kamiakin, so we have come a long way from there for sure. And Zoe Boleneus, our goalkeeper, has really come into her best form of the year at the right time."

The starting point for the defensive effort is holding center midfielder Annie Clark, who was the first player Barmes mentioned when asked about his seniors.

"Man, she is just - last year to this year - been, I think, the person that has shown the most improvement at the consistency with which she does her role in our system. She screens the back line. Anyone can play her the ball and, more often than not, she's gonna get the ball to an open teammate. She does a great job on both sides of the ball and just provides us security and comfort in what we are doing - just a stable role player in there."

They were tested early in a week one game that in retrospect may have been a huge factor in determining the league champion, prevailing 1-0 against that staunch University side on a 60th minute goal from senior Becca Crum.

"Becca, who plays out on the wing, has scored some key goals for us and in some of our big games. She brings us a great presence - someone that can help keep the ball - and also has a great left-footed finishing touch."

From that point, the team scored at least two goals per game, beat recent powerhouse Central Valley 3-1 midseason and finished with a strong second half to the season that saw them defeat three title contenders in the final three weeks.

They topped Ferris 2-1 on goals from Crum and Russell and then rolled through then second-place Mead 5-0 with the initial two goals from senior Tayler Drynan to lock up the regular season league championship with a game to go.

"Drynan, who is a basketball player that only plays soccer in the fall season, has really come into form the second half of the season. She got a lot of opportunities early in the season and didn't finish em. We worked a ton on finishing and one-on-one battles in the attacking third and she's continued to persist in her attacking presence, and has gotten some goals and assists out of it."

They celebrated senior night with a comfortable 3-1 win over 3A top seed Mt Spokane.

The only blip on their campaign was a dropped point in a shootout victory against Lewis & Clark in the third game of league play after a 2-2 draw in which the Bullpups fell behind twice in the second half and forced overtime and the shootout with a 79th minute Russell goal.

A year ago, the Bullpups defense showed signs of the promise with eight goals allowed in eight games played, but the team was 2-3 versus its 4A counterparts as they played to their third consecutive sixth-place finish in the GSL.

They were then ousted from the postseason in a shootout loss by Lewis & Clark after a 1-1 draw in the opening game of districts.

That was when the 2015 championship campaign began for Barmes, who took over the program just before the start of the 2014 season.

"It's been good," he said of his progress in working with the team in his second year. "I came in relatively late in the process last year so I didn't really have enough time to implement an offseason plan or even give them a good idea of what we wanted to test in preseason.

"So, to have the full cycle this second year, and be able to have them knowing ahead of time this is gonna be the physical expectations, the technical expectations that we are gonna test you on in the couple days. Because really, if they don't come in with that baseline, it's hard to make up. The season is short and so that's the biggest piece for year two is they know all the expectations coming in. They put in the work in the offseason that I was going to hold them accountable for.

"And again, its a group where everyone has gotten better from last year to this year. We only lost the two seniors last year, so it is what I knew it could be.

High School Girls Update - October 27: Postseason kicking off for GSL, MCC

With the regular season titles and top seeds for the 3A and 4A classifications already locked up in both leagues, things wrapped up rather quietly in the Greater Spokane League Friday and Mid Columbia Conference Saturday... aside from seniors celebrating their final home games.

There was still a bit of drama left in the Great Northern League where East Valley needed a point to win the league outright in their final game Saturday. Sitting tied with local rival and reigning two-time regular season champion West Valley, the Knights took care of business with a big win over third-place Clarkston to finish as champions after coming up two points short a year ago and a single point shy in 2013. It is the first time they finished atop the table since 2010.

Five different players scored for the Knights in the win, allowing Ashley Meyer of West Valley to finish as the league's top goal scorer with 11 tallies, two better than EV's Skylar Bastin. The Knights do boast, however, the best defensive record in the region with six shutouts to their credit - all from Kari Bromley - and were the only team in the league to score in every match.

The seeding in the GSL remained pretty much unchanged from the final night of action with the exception of Mead, which fell 2-0 to University and allowed Central Valley to slip ahead of them on tiebreakers going into the 4A District tournament. Mead's Alea Acosta, however, remained the league's top goal scorer with nine on the season, edging out Alexis Murphy of Ferris and Larkin Russell of Gonzaga Prep, who each finished with eight. Murphy scored once in the Saxons finale and Russell registered a brace as the Bullpups topped leading 3A side Mt Spokane 3-1.

Despite the loss, the Wildcats finished as the top 3A school, finishing two points better than the combined 14 (seven each) posted by North Central and Shadle Park. They swept their fellow 3A sides this season with an aggregate score of 14-1.

Down in the MCC, Southridge edged their fellow 3A foe Hanford by two wins for the league title at 13-1 when things were all said and done, the lone defeat coming in a shootout at home with Hanford October 3. The top three in the league, in fact, hailed from the lower classification with Kamiakin also reaching double digits in wins at 10-4.

Chiawana won the top seed among the 4A schools with ease at 9-5, besting Richland by four wins. Their leading scorers, however, were the top two in the league in goals with Braydey Hodgins registering 21 and Summer Yates 15. The team lead the league in scoring with 52 goals.

Heather Donais and Maddie Morgan of Kamiakin were the top goal scorers out of the 3A schools in the MCC with 11 each, but their team's defense was one of the best in the region with 11 shutouts in 14 games, many of which were shared between Grace Wilbur and Rachel McClure. Tiara Valadez of Southridge led the way with complete game clean sheets, posting seven among the school's eight for the campaign as the Rams finished with just five goals allowed this season. Kamiakin was second with 10 given up.

Still in league play this week is the all-4A Columbia Basin Big Nine, which will take the field Tuesday and Thursday, and the Northeast A League.

West Valley (Yakima) holds a two-win lead in the CBB9 over Wenatchee, which will likely go unchanged considering the opposition on the calendar. The most intriguing contest among the four games for the two sides in Thursday's match at third-place for Wenatchee, who holds a similar two-win margin over their upcoming hosts.

In the NEA, first place is still up for grabs between leaders Deer Park (9-1) and Freeman (8-2). The two sides square off in their season finale Thursday at Deer Park, but the Stags have the advantage with a three-point lead and a Tuesday contest against 1-9 Colville while Freeman plays feisty Lakeside (6-4), which handed the Scotties one of their two losses this season, 1-0, on the first of the month.

Across the border in Idaho, the state crowned its champions over the weekend. It was a tough week for the schools from northern Idaho as none of them were able to claim a title and three settled for runners-up trophies. The Lake City girls (5A), Lakeland boys (4A) and Coeur d'Alene Charter girls (3A) came up short in the title games. Lake City was even edged out on tiebreaker penalties after six rounds from the spot. The Lake City boys finished third in their bracket and the Timberlake girls were third in 3A. Division I Round-up: Idaho wins conference title; Big Sky and MWC tourneys nearly set

Still showing their doubters wrong, the Idaho Vandals - picked ninth in the preseason - poll now have nine wins on the season after downing North Dakota and second-place Northern Colorado over the weekend to clinch the regular season Big Sky Conference title and right to host the league tournament. Meanwhile, their neighbors up the road at Eastern Washington - chosen seventh - are also continuing their strong showing, playing to a draw against Northern Colorado and getting a win against North Dakota to pull into a tie for second.

In addition to Idaho and Eastern Washington locking up Big Sky tourney spots, preseason co-favorite Montana also inched into the postseason with a pair of narrow one-goal victories. The league wraps up the regular season Friday with one berth and seeding left to be determined.

Meanwhile, Boise State is still in the midst of trying to chase down a conference tournament spot of its own in the Mountain West, which saw an unusual day of games Friday in which all six league fixtures ended in the same 1-0 scoreline. The Broncos split a pair of one-goal contests over the weekend and now find themselves in a race to capture one of the three remaining berths, sitting in a massive logjam mid-table that should present an interesting final day of games and scoreboard watching on Friday.

While some teams were celebrating, it was a tough weekend for the ladies of Gonzaga and Washington State. The Bulldogs were outscored a combined 9-0 in their two-game trip to California while the Cougars dropped a pair of one-goal decisions at home to well-ranked opponents, falling in overtime to fourth-ranked Stanford and in another close one against 14th-ranked California.

Two Spokane natives did well for schools outside the region as Kara Marbury had a great outing for Illinois Friday in a return to action after a concussion and Julia Moravec was a dominant force in a pair of wins for Seattle University that put the Redhawks atop the league table at 7-0-2 with their home finale Saturday against second-place Utah Valley (7-1-1) in a battle for the top seed in the Western Athletic Conference tournament.

Here is a round-up of the action last week:

WOMEN #############

BIG SKY CONFERENCE

Friday, October 23

Idaho 4 :: 0 North Dakota
The Vandals inched closer to securing the top seed in the conference with a big win on the road versus North Dakota. Alyssa Lloyd (Spokane, WA) scored off a corner kick 12 minutes into the contest. Lloyd then helped put the game away in the second half, combining with Josilyn Daggs in the 53rd to set up Kavita Battan. Olivia Baggerly also scored off a corner to push it to three in the 66th and then Kaitlyn Joy beat a defender to tally the final goal in the 79th as Amanda Poertner completed the shutout with four saves.  MORE [+]

Eastern Washington 2 :: 2 Northern Colorado
On the road against the side sitting in front of them second in the table, the Eagles found themselves down two goals less than a half-hour into the match as Mariel Gutierrez set up the opener in the 19th and scored in the 28th as the hosts outshot them 10-4. Whatever was done or said during the intermission led to a completely different second half as the Eagles used a 12-2 advantage in shots to rally. Abby Klinkenberg put away a rebound in the 62nd minute and a similar play in the 71st resulted in a goal from Aimie Inthoulay. The result clinched the program's first back-to-back appearance in the conference tournament and kept the Bears within reach.  MORE [+]

Portland State 0 :: 1 Montana
Two sides searching to stay in the postseason hunt, the pair were locked in a stalemate until the Grizzlies prevailed on an Allie Lucas (Billings, MT) goal in the 87th that she nodded in off a cross from Mackenzie Akins. Kailey Norman made three saves for the clean sheet.  MORE [+]

Idaho State 1 :: 2 Northern Arizona

Weber State 2 :: 1 Southern Utah

Sunday, October 25

North Dakota 1 :: 2 Eastern Washington
The Eagles dominated the visitors with a 38-7 advantage in shots, including a 23-2 tally in a first half that was about as one-sided in possession as a game can get. The domination, however, only resulted in one goal in the opening half with Delaney Romero (Yakima, WA / Walla Walla CC) scoring off a ball sent over the defense by Devan Talley 11 minutes in. A penalty 10 minutes into the second half from a foul on Chloe Williams (Spokane, WA) was converted by Inthoulay for the second goal, which proved necessary with the visitors getting on the board in the 89th via a penalty.  INWsn REPORT [+]

Sacramento State 0 :: 1 Montana
In another tight contest, the Grizzlies earned the result on a single tally with Aspen Peifer scoring from about 10 yards out on a ball from Ashlee Pedersen (Spokane, WA) on a 43rd minute play that initially started on a corner from Mary Gintz that Payton Agnew fed to Pedersen. They nearly locked up the match in the 73rd, but a Charlene Burger shot was stopped on the line by a Hornet defender and a follow-up by Ellie Otteson was stopped with a diving save by the recovering keeper. At the other end Norman saw 12 shots, but only needed to make two saves for her second shutout of the weekend, helping the Grizzlies lock up a berth in the conference tournament.  MORE [+]

Idaho 2 :: 0 Northern Colorado
The Vandals capped their road trip against the second-place side, locking up the league title and the opportunity to host the Big Sky tournament. Clara Gomez scored the opening goal six minutes into the match and with just over seven minutes remaining Lloyd scored on her second corner kick play of the weekend. Poertner made five stops for her ninth shutout of the season and sixth in the league as she has allowed just three goals in conference play.  MORE [+]

Idaho State 2 :: 4 Southern Utah
The Bengals trailed by two even quicker this time out - 14 minutes. Kayla Mizo scored with a header off a Muzo corner in the 35th, but the hosts added two more in the 61st and 82nd to put the game out of reach. A blocked shot in the 85th was put away by Ka'imi Morreira for the Bengals.  MORE [+]

Eastern Washington tops North Dakota, moves back into second

Full INWsn match gallery [+]
The Eastern Washington Eagles put together a great game Sunday with a 2-1 victory over visiting North Dakota, moving the Eagles slightly up the table into a tie with Northern Colorado, which they played to a road draw with on the road Friday, for second place in the league with a game remaining.

Not bad for a team picked in the preseason coaches poll to finish seventh.

"It's what we want the program to be at. It's been a lot of hard work recruiting. The kids that are here are dedicated and committed to what we are doing. We are seeing some results from it, and it's good. At the end of the day it comes down to these last couple weekends - we are just gonna keep working. We are extremely proud of where we are at, but we always want more.

Senior day started off with a thoroughly dominant performance in the first half that saw the Eagles finish with a 23-2 advantage in shots and the defense rarely allowed the visitors passed the center line, and within 25 yards of the goal on two occasions.

Unfortunately, the dominance only yielded one goal for the Eagles, who were buzzing around the net consistently from the start.

Six minutes into the match Devan Talley picked up an unforced turnover at midfield and drove right up the middle to the top of the penalty arc before dishing the ball off to Savannah Hoekstra (Spokane, WA). Hoekstra's shot was blocked, but the ricochet went off another defender and rolled toward goal, missing the right post narrowly to avoid an own goal.

In the 10th minute it looked like Chloe Williams (Spokane, WA) was going to put Eastern in front when a ball in from the right to Hoekstra was redirected to Williams, but her effort from 16 yards smacked off the crossbar.

One minute later, however, the hosts broke through. A ball over the top from Talley put
Delaney Romero (Yakima, WA / Walla Walla CC) through and she fired a nice shot from about 15 yards out to beat the keeper.

The half continued with chance after chance. A 20 yard shot from Williams 26 seconds later was blocked 23 yards wide, and a minute later Williams blocked a clearance to create another chance as she chased it down to the end line and sent a low cross in to Hoekstra only to have her denied inside the six.

In the 34th minute a through ball put Allison Raniere behind the defense as she cut in centrally from the left side to collect the ball, but her unchallenged shot from about 16 yards out went right to goalkeeper Olivia Swenson.

Williams had another shot whistle wide of the mark in the 41st when Paige Gallaway (Spokane, WA), two yards inside the box, laid it back to Williams for the chance.

Two minutes later, the visitors had their best chance of the game when a quick counter caused some issues as they had a two-on-one situation. They were unable to get a solid shot off, however, sending it wide from about 24 yards out.

With less than a half-minute to go, Eastern nearly doubled the lead when Gallaway was dragged down at the very left edge of the box. Raniere quickly restarted the play, catching the visitors off guard as Aimie Inthoulay charged in to send the shot on frame, but Swenson made the stop.

"We played really well. We connected well and we created a lot of chances - had 22 shots. I don't think we could play any better, but the finishing could be better. We got in a lot. But you can't fault that. The kids played extremely hard and I thought, throughout the whole game they played really hard and they were good."

Four minutes into the second North Dakota finally tested goalkeeper Mallory Taylor with a header inside the area that made her work a bit for the save.

After that, the Eagles continued to control the contest, looking to put the match away. A free kick created a chance in the 50th that Williams put wide and a turnover seconds later Lexi Klinkenberg created another, but Hoekstra hit it too lightly and was easily picked up.

Right at the stroke of 10 minutes in, the Eagles were sent to the spot when Williams was driving forward and tripped up three yards inside the box. Inthoulay put it to the right, giving it enough power to get past the Swenson, who got a piece of it as it crossed the line to put Eastern up two.

The visitors worked their way into another rare chance in the 71st when Katie Moller got the ball in the left corner and worked her way into the area where the Eagles defenders were trying not to foul her, but her shot did not challenge Taylor on the play.

Two minutes later Eastern tried to use another quick free kick to beat UND, sending the ball from about 32 yards out forward on the left side that defender M'Kenna Hayes ran onto, but her shot from about 16 yards sailed high. The resulting goal kick, though, nearly netted a third as Swenson had the ball intercepted by Williams, who put her shot just over the bar as well.

With 12 minutes left Eastern threatened again when a ball from senior Tasha Luu (Colville, WA / CC Spokane) on the right popped up in the box off the head of Romero, but the shot from Williams was snared by Swenson.

Eastern's shutout was spoiled when a penalty was called with just over a minute remaining. Kirsten Olson's first attempt to the right was denied by Taylor, but the keeper had made a big step off the line before the kick, giving Olson another chance that she finished.

The result and season has given the team plenty to be excited for in the moment and the future. No matter how things turn out over the next few weeks, the promise of what lies ahead beyond 2015 looks bright with only three seniors - none of whom started - being honored Sunday prior to the contest.

"There's a lot coming back, and a lot of young kids are playing a lot of minutes right now," said Bodnar. "It's encouraging, but we have to keep working, keep going. You can't stop."

Oh, and that one game that remains on the fixture list for the season: the first-place Idaho Vandals that the Eagles topped 2-1 in their final home non-conference game in Cheney earlier this year.

The two programs, separated by a 90-minute drive (72 miles), have been on a nearly identical path and story arc. Both have newly appointed head coaches in their second seasons guiding programs that have had little previous success. And like Eastern, the Vandals were not favored to be contenders this year, selected to finish ninth out of 11 teams.

"That's credit to both programs," Bodnar said. "The winning is something that we expect; like I said. It's something we at the beginning of the year talk about. Sometimes the only people that believe that are in your own locker room. I am proud of our kids, and proud of what we've done. But we are gonna keep going, keep pushing."

Like Eastern, winning consistently is a new paradigm in Moscow, where the Vandals not only have faced changing the outcome on the field, but did it in a new conference. Idaho is in its first season playing in the Big Sky Conference, though it has played a few area teams like EWU in non-conference games previously.

"They've done really well. Credit to Derek and their staff, and their kids. They've found a style that suited them and they've gotten results," Bodnar said. "It's gonna be a battle - it always is between the two schools. We are happy to be in the spot that we are at."
