Week Five CWA HS Round-Up: Pasco unbeaten streak snapped by Chiawana

Chiawana and Davis celebrate dramatic wins in top of table clashes (John Sokol & Tracie Fowler)
The big story of the week in the MCC and CBB9 was the end of Pasco's impressive league unbeaten streak that saw them go 32 games against MCC opposition without a loss in regulation or overtime.

MID COLUMBIA CONFERENCE

Things transpired normally for Pasco during the two midweek contests, drubbing Richland and Walla Walla to a combined score of 11-0. Jesus Meraz-Rodriguez tallied two goals and an assist in the 4-0 win over visiting Richland and added another two goals at Walla Walla in a 7-0 win. Hector Magana also provided two goals and an assist against the Bombers along with a goal and two assists at Walla Walla.

Right on the heels of Pasco, Chiawana blanked Southridge 3-0 thanks in part to two goals from Isaac Ponce, but perhaps got caught looking forward to Saturday when they hosted Kennewick on Thursday. Ponce scored the lone goal, but a 1-1 stalemate went to a shootout and the Lions were able to snare the victory.

Saturday's big showdown was a wild one as Pasco twice took the lead against Chiawana with goals from Magana and Sergio Avalos, but Jose Rodriguez answered twice for the Riverhawks and Shambel West provided the winning tally in overtime.

The Bulldogs had not lost in regulation or overtime in their last 29 league games (32 including MCC opposition in playoffs). The streak included two shootout wins and a shootout loss (2-1 on Apr 22, 2014 to Walla Walla :: 26 consecutive since that SO-L). Their last proper defeat, 2-1, was to Chiawana on April 12, 2014.

With the top 4A sides battling for the outright league title, the race for the top spot among the 3A schools is mired in a log-jam mid-table. Hanford topped Kamiakin 2-1 on Monday with a pair of goals from Will Eldrid, but a pair of assists from him on Thursday was not enough as they fell 3-2 in a shootout at Southridge, which was led by a pair of assists from Emilio Sanchez.

Kamiakin escaped a close call Thursday at Richland with a 2-1 win. On Saturday, Kennewick topped visiting Southridge 3-1 with a goal and assist each from Eddie Castillo and Armando Ponce. Unlike Kamiakin, Hanford was unable to get past Richland, falling 4-3 to the Bombers after two goals and an assist from Eldrid and a pair of goals from Miguel Ramirez on the other side.

Michael Raya (Tracie Fowler)
COLUMBIA BIG BASIN NINE

Two of the league's top sides squared off on Tuesday in the Big 9 and needed a shootout to decide the outcome with Davis coming out on top for a 2-1 victory over visiting Wenatchee. Later in the week Davis squared off against another contender, squeaking out a narrow 1-0 road win at Sunnyside with a goal from Michael Raya in the first half holding up.

Eastmont swept their two games on the week against the cellar dwellers, downing visiting West Valley 2-1 and drubbing host Eisenhower 5-1. Johan Espinoza scored three goals in the second win and Farace Nassar scored once in each.

Moses Lake split on the week with a 2-0 win over Sunnyside, but in what has become a very up-and-down season they fell later in the week against West Valley.

INWsn's CENTRAL WASHINGTON THREE STARS - Week 5

Will Eldrid (Hanford) :: Tallied both goals in a 2-1 victory over Kamiakin, two assists in a 3-2 shootout loss at Southride and two goals and an assist Saturday in a 4-3 shootout loss versus Richland.

Johan Espinoza (Eastmont) :: Hat-trick in a 5-1 win at Eisenhower completed a sweep on the week that put the Wildcats in the middle of the table.

Jose Rodriguez (Chiawana) :: Scored two goals to help lead Chiawana to the streak-busting victory over Pasco Saturday.

Week Five EWA HS Round-Up: End of CV streak among upsets

It was a dramatic week of close contest, upsets and showdowns between contenders among the Spokane area leagues last week. Central Valley's 24-game unbeaten run* came to an end and GNL contenders squared off against one another.

GREATER SPOKANE LEAGUE

Aside from a blowout by Central Valley against North Central, Wednesday's action saw a series of close contests. The highlight among them was a narrow 1-0 win by Ferris over Lewis & Clark in which Andrew Fruci stole the ball with less than two minutes remaining and fed Callan Martin for the winner.

Mt Spokane, meanwhile, nearly made an amazing comeback from three down against rival Mead, but the free kick late in the contest by Tyler Smith, who posted a goal and assist in the rally, was saved by Andrew Huffman off the crossbar. University posted a close win over Shadle Park, 2-1, and Gonzaga Prep got past Rogers with a 2-0 win.

Friday, however, was a completely different story. Their were three shutout victories and a scoreless affair settled in a shootout.

The night, though, was highlighted by the surprising loss by Central Valley at Mead. Peter Weller, who tallied a goal and assist Wednesday, scored twice on the afternoon to rally Mead past Central Valley for a 2-1 win. It was the first GSL league loss for the Bears since April 16, 2014 (a 1-0 SO loss to Ferris) and first regulation/OT defeat since March 26, 2014 (a 2-1 loss to LC). CV had not lost a game in Regulation or overtime versus GSL opposition in 24 games, including three postseason contests.

Meanwhile, 3A sides were also busy making things difficult for 4A opposition. North Central edged University on a goal from Aidan Chapparo and Mt Spokane took Gonzaga Prep in a scoreless stalemate to the tiebreaker before falling.  LC blanked Rogers 2-0 and Fruci scored twice for Ferris in a 3-0 win against Shadle.

GREAT NORTHERN LEAGUE

The trio of Pullman, East Valley and West Valley are making things interesting in the league. On Tuesday, East Valley prevailed at home in a shootout thanks to two saves from Kohl Tomcho in the tiebreaker after the two sides finished scoreless.

On Saturday, the Spokane Valley rivals squared off in a morning affair that saw host West Valley grab the lead in the first half, but East Valley scored early in the second half when Trevor Jacobs put the ball in the empty goal after Zack Babinski missed the ball leaping out to knock away a looping free kick. Devonte Gorman created the winner with two minutes left when he drove toward goal, putting the ball into a scramble inside the six that was put away by Matthew Spitze.

The rest of the contests on the week were one-sided affairs.

NORTHEAST A LEAGUE

Lakeside was the location of two contests featuring early contenders. On Tuesday Medical Lake came away 5-3 winners with Peter Hanson scoring twice, but it was not easy as the hosts made a late rally to make it close.

Lakeside had a second chance with Colville visiting, but Alberto Cisneros proved too much with a pair of goals. After a scoreless first half, Cisneros broke the stalemate with a well-struck ball from the right, but Caio Hessel scored a great goal, redirecting a ball mid-air from Jeff Friedman. Nick Wolf put the visitors back in front and Cisneros made the lead two, but Hessel again made for a dramatic finish with a late goal.

While all eyes were focused on Lakeside, it was Riverside that registered the upsets of the week. On Tuesday, they rallied from an early deficit with Josh Thompson providing a goal and assist in the final 10 minutes of the first half for a 2-1 win. Two days later they stunned host Medical Lake with a 2-0 win, getting a goals from Xavier Batle-Fuentes in each half.

INWsn's EASTERN WASHINGTON THREE STARS - Week 5

Kohl Tomcho - East Valley :: The goalkeeper registered three wins on the week. It started with two saves in a shootout tiebreaker after a scoreless match against Pullman to give the Knights the win. He then allowed one goal in the second half at Clarkston while comfortably ahead and then allowed just one goal in a 2-1 road win over rival West Valley Saturday.

Weller - Mead :: Scored both goals in the 2-1 upset win that ended Central Valley's GSL unbeaten streak and tallied a goal and assist in the 3-2 win over rival Mt Spokane.

Fruci - Ferris :: Created the winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Lewis & Clark and tallied two goals in a 3-0 win against Shadle Park.

Week Three & Four EWA HS Round-Up: Pullman falters and NEA kicks off with 41 goals in six games

Connor Harlow's first save in shootout versus NC; Nick Wolf and Alberto Cisneros leading Colville attack
Before taking a moment for Spring Break, the three Spokane area leagues saw some interesting results. Chief among them was Pullman suffering its first loss in the GNL, Mead needing overtime to defeat Rogers in the GSL and a bevy of high scoring games in the opening week of play in the NEA.

In the Greater Spokane League, the biggest surprise of the week nearly took place at Mead. Rogers grabbed the initial lead just before halftime on a strike from Abdul Muse. The Panthers pulled even on a penalty midway through the second half, but were unable to put the Pirates away until overtime when defender Joe Ammatelli scored the winner three minutes in.

Two other contests were tight affairs on the day. The Saxons made a 25th minute Curt McCune goal stand up for a 1-0 Ferris victory over Gonzaga Prep and Shadle Park came out on top against rival North Central in a game that went the distance and more.

Scoreless at the break, LaQuan Crump put North Central on the board a minute into the second half but the Highlanders answered through Andreas Wilson 12 minutes later. The two remained deadlocked the rest of the way, sending the match to penalties, which also went long. Both goalkeepers made a pair of saves in the initial five shots with Josh Ruff making the first stop for NC to put pressure on Shadle. Connor Harlow, though, made a pair of great stops and then added a third in the eighth round to give the Highlanders the win.

The other two contests were one-sided affairs with Central Valley posting a 7-1 win over Mt Spokane while Lewis & Clark registered a 4-1 win over visiting University. Mark McClain scored four for the Bears and Jared Mahaffey assisted on three for the Tigers.

The Great Northern League is proving to be a competitive league after all with the Pullman Greyhounds proving not to be invincible after all. Having won their first four games by an aggregate tally of 11-3, the Greyhounds suffered their first defeat in the second half of Week 3, dropping a 2-1 overtime decision at West Valley. The Eagles used a pair of goals from Kual Nyiang, who provided the lone goal earlier in the week in a 1-0 win over rival East Valley, to rally for the win after Ryan Tattershall had put the Greyhounds on the board in the opening minute. He scored the first in the 10th to quickly even it up, but the second did not come until the first minute of extra time.

Meanwhile, East Valley rebounded with an comeback overtime win as well. Cheney built a two-goal lead at home on a pair of penalties, one in each half, before the Knights answered with a conversion from the spot themselves with five minutes left. They managed to force overtime with a Demitri Konzenya strike in the final minute of the half and then Trevor Jacobs scored three minutes into the golden goal session.

Pullman and West Valley went on to post shutout wins over Cheney and Clarkston, respectively, the following Tuesday in the only action of Week Four in the area.

The Northeast A League opened up its league play in Week Three with a trio of one-sided affairs that saw the winners outscore their opponents 19-5. Colville rocked Riverside 6-2 with goals from five different players, including two from Alberto Cisneros, and Lakeside drubbed Deer Park 9-2 in which Caio Hessel tallied three goals and an assist and Ethan Williams had two goals and two assists. Newport surprised last year's regular season co-leader Medical Lake 4-1 with a pair of goals each from Kai Thomas and Johnny Quandt.

The high goal tallies continued in the second half of the week. Colville won 5-3 at Newport with three goals from Cisneros and Medical Lake rebounded with a 6-2 win over Deer Park, getting a pair of first half goals from Peter Hansen. Lakeside, meanwhile, escaped an upset at the hands of Riverside. After an initial fourth-minute goal from Hessel, the Eagles fell behind with Jeff Thompson equalizing two minutes later and Pratt giving the hosts the lead in the 18th. Lukas Ousley evened it up in the 63rd for Lakeside and Jeffery Friedman provided the winner with nine minutes left.

NWsn's EASTERN WASHINGTON THREE STARS - Week 3 & 4

Alberto Cisneros (Colville) :: Tallied two goals and an assist in a 6-2 home win versus Riverside and scored three goals to propel them to a 5-3 road win against Newport.

Connor Harlow (Shadle Park) :: Made three saves in an eight-round shootout to give the Highlanders a shootout victory against North Central

Kual Nyiang (West Valley) :: Scored the deciding tally in a 1-0 victory at East Valley and both goals in a 2-1 overtime victory over previously unbeaten Pullman. He also added a penalty kick tally in a 2-0 win at Clarkston.

Week Three & Four CWA HS Round-Up: Pasco, Chiawana pulling away in MCC

Central Washington Round-Up:  The CBB9 is proving to be a competitive league this season with Wenatchee, Sunnyside, Davis and Moses Lake fighting for the top spot in the league and Eastmont sitting within striking distance and proving to be a difficult side to beat.

Central Washington HS coverage brought
to you by Wenatchee FC & Yakima United
In Week Three, Wenatchee cruised to a 5-0 win over West Valley and Davis a 2-0 result against Eisenhower, but Moses Lake held on for a narrow 3-2 victory at home versus Eastmont with Anthony Cortez scoring twice. Later in the week Sunnyside picked up a 2-0 win at West Valley and Wenatchee dominated at Eisenhower. Eastmont, though, nipped Davis in overtime with a Johan Espinoza tally in the 88th minute and a shutout performance from Alex Pease in goal.

It was more of the same in Week Four with Sunnyside dominating at Eisenhower and Davis topping Moses Lake in a surprising 6-2 scoreline. Eastmont again proved to be a tough opponent as they came up short in a 4-3 goal-fest at Wenatchee. Later in the week Moses Lake suffered another big loss at the hands of Wenatchee while Sunnyside also narrowly avoided an upset by Eastmont with a 2-1 victory on the road. In the showdown of the bottom two sides, Eisenhower picked up its first victory against West Valley thanks to a pair of goals from Gonzalo Frausto after Eastmont's first-minute opening tally.

The MCC, meanwhile, is starting to look like a two-horse race between 4A sides Pasco and Chiawana. Both, however, had to survive close calls in Week Three.

On Tuesday, Pasco edged visiting Southridge 2-1 with Oscar Cortez providing the winner in the final minute of play and then survived an overtime affair at Kamiakin with Joel Valley providing a goal and assist for a 2-1 win. Meanwhile, Chiawana slipped by visiting Hanford 2-1 and went the distance against Richland, prevailing in a shootout after finishing even at one each. In their lone games of Week Four things were a bit easier with Chiawana rolling to a 4-0 win against Walla Walla and Pasco blanking Hanford 2-0.

Week Three was full of close contests with only two of the eight games decided by more than one goal - Kennewick's 2-0 loss to Kamiakin and 4-1 defeat at Hanford. In a battle of the bottom two Richland nabbed a narrow 1-0 win at Walla Walla, which also took Southridge to penalties in a scoreless affair before falling in the tiebreaker.  In Week Four, Kamiakin won 2-0 at Southridge and Kennewick returned to the winning side of things with a narrow 3-2 result against visiting Richland.
